1 The fourth son of Japheth (Gen 10:2; 1Chr 1:15). His name, like the names of the fifth (Tubal) and sixth (Meshech) sons, also became the name for the area he settled, 2 below. 2 A region in Asia Minor (Gk. Ionia). In the passage in Isaiah, Javan and Tubal are specifically referred to as “coastlands.” In the latter passage, a famous lament, Ezekiel states that Javan, Tubal, and Meshech trafficked with Tyre in slaves and vessels of bronze. Ionia was located between Aeolia and Doria. Famous cities of Javan (Ionia) were Miletus, Ephesus, Smyrna (Rev 2:8-11), and Magnesia. 3 A name for Greece overall, hence in (Joel 3:6) the “Greeks” are literally the “sons of Javan,” and in (Dan 8:21) “the king of Javan” is Alexander the Great. “Javan” also means “Greece” in (Zech 9:13; Dan 10:20; and Dan 11:2).
