1 A son of the tribe of Manasseh who conquered the region of Argob in Gilead (Num 32:41; Deut 3:14). The captured cities were called Havvoth-jair and were sixty in number (Josh 13:30; 1Kgs 4:13). In (1Chr 2:22), Segub of Judah is the father of Jair and his mother is from Manasseh. Possibly, one of the descendants of Jair is appointed David’s priest (2Sam 20:26). 2 According to another tradition (Judg 10:3-4), a judge, also of Gilead, whose thirty sons possessed thirty cities, also called Havvoth-jair. 3 The father of Mordecai, a descendant of King Saul (Esth 2:5; 1Sam 9:1). 4 The father of Elhanan (2Sam 21:19; 1Chr 20:5).
