Ittai

It´i; Heb., possibly “with God”

1 The “Gittite” who swore an oath of loyalty to David during Absalom’s revolt (2Sam 15:19-23). He was a commander of one-third of David’s army, thus ranking with Joab and his brother Abishai (2Sam 18:2-12). His loyalty to David is remarkable because he was a foreigner, only recently arrived in Judah. The epithet “Gittite” indicates that he was from the Philistine city of Gath. 2 The son of Ribai of Gibeah in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin; he was one of David’s “Thirty” soldiers (2Sam 23:29; 1Chr 11:31).
