Ithamar

Ith´uh-mahr

The fourth and youngest son of Aaron (Exod 6:23). Ithamar’s priestly line continued to enjoy prominence, but not dominance, according to biblical writers, even after the fall of Jerusalem (1Chr 24:1-18). The two elder sons of Aaron died when presumptuously offering incense before the Lord, and the priestly succession thus devolved upon Eleazar and Ithamar (Lev 10:1-7). Kohathites who carried the Ark were subservient to Eleazar; Gershonites and Merarites who performed more menial duties were subservient to Ithamar (Num 4:1-33). The line of Eleazar is traced through Zadok, the line of Ithamar through Abiathar of Shiloh. Ezekiel recognized only the succession through Zadok, but the Chronicler recognized the validity of both priestly lines.
