Isaiah (name)


I-zay´yuh; Heb., “salvation of God” or “God is salvation”

A common name, appearing especially in the postexilic period (Ezra 8:7; Ezra 8:19; Neh 11:7; 1Chr 3:21; 1Chr 25:3; 1Chr 25:15; 1Chr 26:25). The best-known figure of Isaiah is the prophet from Jerusalem mentioned in (2Kgs 19:20; 2Chr 26:22; and 2Chr 32:20, 2Chr 32:32). He is usually thought to be responsible for chaps. 1–39 of the book that bears his name (chaps. 40–66 are attributed to followers or students who lived during a later period).
