Hophni

Hof´ni; Egyptian, “tadpole”

The brother of Phinehas and the son of Eli, the priest at the tabernacle of the Lord in Shiloh in the days of Samuel. Hophni and his brother also served as priests at Shiloh, but they disgraced themselves. Even Eli was accused of honoring his sons more than the Lord, so they were all condemned (1Sam 1-2). Their leadership gave way to Samuel’s as the two sons were killed when the Ark of God was captured, and Eli died upon hearing the news (1Sam 4).
