Uh-bi´uh-thahr
The son of Ahimelech, who escaped the slaughter of the priests of Nob and joined David’s outlaw band (1Sam 22:2-23), where he served as private chaplain (1Sam 23:6-11). He was rewarded by David for his loyalty with a monarchic appointment as chief priest (2Sam 20:25), but he was later banished by King Solomon to the family estate in Anathoth for his part in supporting Adonijah, Solomon’s rival to the throne (1Kgs 2:26-27). The prophet Jeremiah may have been a descendant of the family of Abiathar (Jer 1:1). He is identified as high priest in David’s time in (Mark 2:26).
